The best sunset spots in Paraty

Paraty's light does something special at the end of the day, when the bay goes gold and the islands turn to silhouettes. These are the spots I send guests to — and the one I keep for myself.

Golden hour

Where to be when the light turns.

The bay faces in a way that gives you long, soft sunsets and, on the right nights, a moonrise over the water that beats the sunset entirely. Here's where to stand for each.

The Forte Defensor Perpétuo

For the widest view, walk up to the Forte Defensor Perpétuo — twenty minutes from the center — and take in the whole bay, the islands, and the mountains behind. Arrive with time to spare, find a spot on the ramparts, and watch the light slide down the water. It's the classic Paraty sunset.

Praia do Pontal, drink in hand

For something easier, cross to Praia do Pontal, order a caipirinha at a beach bar, and let the day end with your feet near the sand. It's low effort, high reward — and a short stroll from the historic center for dinner after.

On the water

The best sunsets I've seen here were from a boat. A late-afternoon private cruise that anchors in a quiet cove for the golden hour, with the town lights coming on as you motor back, is hard to beat — especially for couples.

The one I keep for myself — moonrise from the hill

Here's the secret: on this side of the bay, the real show is often after sunset. From the deck at Cantinho do Marinheiro, on the nights the moon comes up over the water, the whole bay silvers and the town lights flicker across it. The pool shifts from blue to violet. No booking, no walk — just the deck, a drink, and the quiet. It's why I built the place up here.
