Rio airport to Paraty

You've landed at Galeão. Paraty is about four hours down the coast. Here are your options, from door-to-door comfort to the budget bus.

From the terminal

GIG or SDU — then the Costa Verde.

Rio has two airports: Galeão / Antônio Carlos Jobim (GIG), the big international hub, and Santos Dumont (SDU), the small downtown domestic one. From either, the last leg to Paraty is a road trip — by private car, bus, or rental.

Option 1 — Private transfer (most comfortable)

A pre-booked private transfer meets you at arrivals and takes you door to door in an air-conditioned car — about 4 to 4.5 hours from GIG. After a long international flight, this is the option most guests are happiest with: no navigating the Rio–Santos, no tolls to fumble, no bus connection. Bianca arranges these regularly with trusted drivers; message her with your flight details and she'll set it up.

Arrive relaxed: a private transfer runs door to door from the airport to the chalet.

Option 2 — Bus (best value)

The Costa Verde line runs many buses a day to Paraty, but they leave from the Novo Rio bus terminal (Rodoviária Novo Rio), not the airport. From GIG it's a 30–40 minute taxi or app ride to the terminal; from SDU it's even closer. The coach ride itself is comfortable and air-conditioned and takes about 4.5 to 5 hours. Total travel time is longer than a transfer, but the fare is a fraction of the cost. See our bus guide for schedules and booking.

Option 3 — Rent a car

All the major rental companies operate at GIG. Renting makes sense if you want freedom to explore Paraty's beaches and waterfalls — just be ready for a winding coastal drive straight off the plane. If you're jet-lagged, consider a transfer in and a rental picked up locally later, or skip the car entirely and lean on taxis and tours.

Which is right for you?

Landing late, travelling as a couple or family, or simply want it easy? Book a transfer. On a budget and happy to connect through the bus terminal? Take the Costa Verde. Planning to chase beaches and falls under your own steam? Rent a car. Whatever you choose, send Bianca your arrival time so the chalet — and, if you like, a welcome set-up — is ready when you get here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Rio airport to Paraty?
Three ways: a private door-to-door transfer (~4–4.5 h), the Costa Verde bus from the Novo Rio terminal (~4.5–5 h plus the ride to the terminal), or a rental car driven down the BR-101.
Is there a direct bus from GIG to Paraty?
Not from the airport itself. Buses to Paraty leave from the Novo Rio bus terminal, a 30–40 minute taxi from GIG.
How much is a transfer from Rio to Paraty?
It varies by season and vehicle, but a private transfer costs considerably more than the bus and considerably less than the stress of driving jet-lagged. Ask Bianca for a current quote with your dates.
Which Rio airport is better for Paraty?
Either works. GIG (Galeão) handles international flights; SDU (Santos Dumont) is smaller and closer to the Novo Rio bus terminal if you plan to take the bus.
Can the host arrange the transfer?
Yes — Bianca books private transfers from both Rio airports with drivers she trusts. Send your flight number and arrival time on WhatsApp.
