Saco do Mamanguá

A long, narrow inlet reaching deep into the mountains — often called Brazil's only tropical fjord. Calm water for paddling, a peak to climb, and oysters straight from the water.

The fjord

Still water between green walls.

Mamanguá is a place apart: a sheltered arm of the sea, eight kilometres long, hemmed by forested ridges and dotted with caiçara fishing communities and oyster farms. Because it's so protected, the water stays glassy — perfect for a kayak or a paddleboard.

Paddle the fjord (SUP & kayak)

The calm, flat water makes Mamanguá one of the best stand-up paddle and kayak spots on the whole coast. You can paddle past mangroves and tiny beaches, pull up at a floating oyster farm to try them fresh, and float in near silence. Rentals and guided paddles are available at the mouth of the fjord; go in the morning before any afternoon breeze.

Climb the Pico do Pão de Açúcar

The signature hike here is the Pico do Pão de Açúcar do Mamanguá (Mamanguá's own Sugarloaf) — a steep 2–3 hour climb to a summit that looks straight down the length of the fjord to the open sea. It's demanding and the final scramble is exposed, so go with a guide and start early. The view is one of the best in the region.

Getting there from Paraty

Mamanguá lies near Paraty-Mirim, south of town. You can drive to Paraty-Mirim (part of the road is unpaved) and take a short boat into the fjord, or reach it directly by boat from Paraty. Guided trips combine the boat, a paddle, and sometimes the hike into one day. Ask Bianca to help you set it up — access depends on tide and conditions.

Make it a slow day

Mamanguá isn't a checklist stop; it's a place to linger. Pair a morning paddle with fresh oysters and a swim, or add the peak for an active day. Either way you'll leave wondering why it isn't more famous — and glad that it isn't.
