Beaches in Paraty

Paraty's bay holds dozens of beaches — some a short drive away, some reachable only on foot or by boat. Here is how to pick the right one for the day you have in mind.

The lay of the land

Three kinds of Paraty beach.

Think of Paraty's beaches in three groups: the easy ones you can drive to, the wild ones you hike or boat into, and the island coves you reach by schooner. The best trips usually mix all three across a few days.

Easy beaches near town

For a low-effort beach day, Praia Grande is the local default — a wide, calm strip about ten minutes from the center with kiosks selling fried fish and cold beer. Praia do Pontal, just across the river from the historic center, is the closest of all and good for a sunset caipirinha. Praia do Jabaquara, a short walk north, is shallow and family-friendly — and the stage for Carnival's famous bloco da lama (mud block).

Clear, calm water is the rule on the Paraty side of the Costa Verde.

Wild beaches worth the effort

Praia do Sono is the region's most beloved hike-in beach — a rustic, car-free crescent reached by a forest trail (or a short boat) with no roads and a barefoot pace. Down the coast, the village of Trindade strings together several beaches and the celebrated Piscina Natural, a rock-rimmed natural pool you snorkel in. Both reward the extra travel with far fewer crowds than the roadside beaches.

Island & boat-only coves

The bay's 65 islands hide the coves that make Paraty famous — Praia da Lula, Saco da Velha, Praia Vermelha, the beaches of Ilha Comprida — most with no road access at all. The way to see them is a schooner or speedboat tour, stopping to swim and snorkel between islands. For something singular, Saco do Mamanguá — a tropical fjord — is a paddle-and-hike world of its own.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best beach in Paraty?
It depends on the day. For easy access, Praia Grande; for a wild hike-in beach, Praia do Sono; for a natural swimming pool, Trindade's Piscina Natural; for pure escape, the schooner-only island coves.
Are there beaches you can walk to from Paraty's center?
Praia do Pontal is just across the river, and Praia do Jabaquara is a short walk north. For nicer swimming, Praia Grande is about ten minutes by car or taxi.
Do I need a boat to see the best beaches?
For the island coves, yes — a schooner or speedboat tour. But Trindade and Praia do Sono are reachable by car and trail, and the town beaches need nothing at all.
Are Paraty's beaches good for children?
Yes — Jabaquara and Praia Grande are shallow and calm, ideal for families. See our Paraty with kids guide for more.
When is the water calmest and clearest?
Generally the drier months (roughly April to October) bring clearer water and calmer seas, though summer is warmest. Your host can advise day to day.
