Paraty waterfalls

Behind the beaches, the Atlantic forest is stitched with waterfalls and clear river pools — some a short drive from town, one you can actually slide down. Here are the best.

Fresh water

Swap salt for a forest pool.

When the sea's had its turn, head inland. Paraty's waterfalls range from gentle family pools to a genuine rock water-slide, most clustered along the old Gold Trail where the rivers come down off the Serra.

Cachoeira do Tobogã (the natural water slide)

The famous one. At the Cachoeira do Tobogã (near the little Igreja de Penha, about 10 km from town) a smooth rock chute lets you slide into a deep pool below. Watch the local daredevils surf it standing up before you decide how brave you feel. The rocks are slippery — start seated, keep kids to the shallow pools, and don't attempt the standing slide. A rustic bar overlooks the falls, and the Engenho d'Ouro cachaça distillery is right next door for a tasting after.

Sete Quedas & the Gold Trail falls

Up the Caminho do Ouro (Gold Trail), the Rio Pequeno drops through a series of falls and pools — the Sete Quedas ('seven falls') chain and the popular Poço do Tarzan. The trail is wide and mostly gentle, good for families, with a forest bar near the top serving simple food and cold beer. It's our favourite half-day when the town heat builds.

Cachoeira do Saco Bravo (by boat)

For something rarer, Saco Bravo is a waterfall that tumbles almost straight into the sea inside a hidden inlet — reached by boat rather than trail. It's a longer outing and weather-dependent, but unforgettable: fresh water and salt water within a few steps. Ask your host if conditions suit a trip.

When to go & how to stay safe

Waterfalls run fullest in the rainy season (roughly November–March), which also makes the rocks slickest and the currents strongest — never swim right after heavy rain, when flash rises are a real risk. In the drier months the pools are calmer and clearer. Always wear grippy footwear, follow local signs, and don't climb above the falls. Most sites are a short drive from Cantinho do Marinheiro; a car or a taxi gets you there, and guided trips are easy to arrange.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best waterfall near Paraty?
The Cachoeira do Tobogã is the most famous, thanks to its natural rock water-slide. For a gentle family option, the Sete Quedas falls and pools along the Gold Trail are ideal.
Can you really slide down the Tobogã waterfall?
Yes — a smooth rock chute drops into a pool. Slide seated for safety; the standing 'surf' is for experienced locals only, as the rock is very slippery.
How far are the waterfalls from Paraty?
Most are a short drive — the Tobogã is about 10 km from town, and the Gold Trail falls a similar distance. A car, taxi, or guided trip gets you there easily.
When is the best time to visit the waterfalls?
The rainy season (November–March) brings the fullest flow but slippery rocks and stronger currents; the drier months give calmer, clearer pools. Never swim just after heavy rain.
Are the waterfalls safe for children?
The calmer pools at Sete Quedas suit families, but keep children out of strong currents and off the slide. Grippy footwear helps everywhere.
