Warm water, curious fish, and dozens of sheltered coves — Paraty is a gentle, welcoming place to put your face in the sea. Here's where the clear water is.
This isn't a big-drama dive destination — it's better than that for most travellers: warm, protected water full of small reef life, ideal for snorkelling off a boat and for first dives.
The island snorkel points on the schooner circuit — around Ilha Comprida, Lagoa Azul, and the quieter coves — are where most snorkelling happens, with easy entries straight off the boat into shallow, fishy water. On land, the Piscina Natural at Trindade is a natural rock pool made for snorkelling, calm and clear with fish that barely mind you. Bring your own mask if you're picky about fit; boats carry loaners.

A few local operators run dives and beginner 'try-dives' (batismo) around the islands — a supervised first breath underwater in calm, shallow water, no certification needed. Certified divers can explore reefs and a couple of small wrecks. Visibility is modest compared with tropical dive meccas, but for a first dive or a relaxed second, it's lovely. Book through your host to reach the reputable operators.
Water clarity swings with the weather. The drier months (roughly April–October) generally bring calmer seas and better visibility; heavy summer rain can cloud the water near river mouths. Wind is the other factor — a flat, sunny day is worth waiting for. Mornings are usually calmest.
