Praia do Sono

No road reaches it, which is the whole appeal. A trail through the forest (or a short boat ride) delivers you to a rustic, palm-backed beach where the pace drops to nothing.

The escape

The beach you have to earn.

Praia do Sono — 'sleep beach' — is the Costa Verde at its most unplugged: no cars, a scatter of simple pousadas and kiosks, and sand that runs long and quiet. Getting there is half the experience.

Getting there — the trail

The classic approach starts at Vila Oratório in the Laranjeiras area, south of Paraty. From the trailhead it's a 60–75 minute walk over a forested headland — a real trail with roots and rises, not a stroll, but manageable for anyone reasonably fit in proper shoes. You crest the hill and drop down to the beach through the palms. Bring water and reef-safe sunscreen; there's a small parking area at the trailhead.

Getting there — the boat

Prefer to skip the hike (or save your legs for the way back)? Small boats run from Laranjeiras to Praia do Sono in about 15 minutes, weather permitting. Many people walk one way and boat the other. Your host can point you to the boatmen and current rates.

What to expect when you arrive

Sono is rustic by design. A handful of family-run kiosks grill fish and mix caipirinhas; a few pousadas and campsites host those who stay the night. There's little phone signal and no ATM — bring cash. The reward is space: a long beach, warm water, and the feeling of having stepped off the grid.

Beyond Sono — Antigos & Antiguinhos

From Praia do Sono, another short forest trail leads to Praia dos Antigos and, further on, tiny Antiguinhos — even wilder, even emptier. If you have the energy, chaining them makes a perfect adventure day. Start early, watch the time for the walk back, and don't get caught by the tide or the dark.
