What to do in Paraty when it rains

Rain is part of the tropics, and in Paraty it rarely lasts all day. A wet spell isn't a lost day — some of the town's best experiences are better in the rain. Here's what I tell guests.

Wet weather

Some of the best days are the grey ones.

Summer especially brings afternoon downpours that pass as fast as they arrive. Have a plan for the grey hours and you'll find the rain adds atmosphere rather than ruining the day.

Waterfalls run harder in the rain

Counter-intuitive but true: the waterfalls and the Sete Quedas pools are more dramatic when it's raining, the forest greener and mistier, and the trailside restaurant stays open and cosy. Skip it right after a heavy storm (currents rise fast), but a steady rain is a fine time to go — just wear grippy shoes.

A grey afternoon is made for a slow lunch, a tasting, or a candlelit dinner.

Taste your way through it — cachaça & food

A rainy afternoon is the perfect excuse for the cachaça trail — a distillery tour and tasting keeps you dry and warm. Or book a cooking class to learn a moqueca, or simply settle into a café for coffee and pão de queijo and watch the streets glisten. The old town is beautiful wet, the cobblestones shining under the lamps.

Culture indoors

Duck into the churches and the Casa da Cultura, browse the galleries and boutiques, or catch whatever's on if you're here during a festival. Paraty's indoor culture is richer than its size suggests — a grey day is a good day to find it.

Or just stay in

And honestly? Sometimes the best rainy-day plan is the deck at Cantinho do Marinheiro with the rain on the roof, a hot tub in the Chalé Master, a book, and nowhere to be. The storm blows through, the bay reappears, and you head out for the evening. Rain in Paraty is rarely a whole day — and never really a wasted one.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in Paraty when it rains?
Plenty — visit the waterfalls (they run harder in the rain), tour a cachaça distillery, take a cooking class, explore the churches and Casa da Cultura, browse galleries, or settle into a café. The old town is lovely wet.
Does it rain a lot in Paraty?
The wettest months are roughly December to March, with hot afternoon downpours that usually pass quickly rather than lasting all day. Winter (June–August) is much drier.
Are the waterfalls worth visiting in the rain?
Yes — they're more dramatic and the forest is at its greenest. Just avoid going right after a heavy storm, when currents rise fast, and wear grippy footwear.
Can you still enjoy Paraty in bad weather?
Absolutely. Between cachaça tastings, cooking classes, museums, cafés, and simply relaxing at the chalet, a rainy day in Paraty is full of good options — and the rain rarely lasts.
